The end of daylight saving time is a good time for quick upgrades at home.
This Sunday at 2:00am we turn our clocks back one hour. Electricians with Mister Sparky® recommend also checking the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. While you are in the home improvement mode, here are some other improvements to consider:
For more information on these and other fall electrical tips, contact your local Mister Sparky.
- Upgrade your light bulbs.
With less daylight, you may be using your lights more. The National Resources Defense Council recommends replacing your traditional light bulbs with (CFL) compact fluorescent or LED (light emitting diode) blubs because they use 75% less energy and last 10 to 25 times longer.
- Upgrade your safety alarms.
Smoke alarms should be changed every ten years. The National Fire Protection Association also recommends installing an alarm that uses both ionization and photoelectric technologies. Ionization smoke alarms are generally more responsive to flaming fires and photoelectric smoke alarms are generally more responsive to smoldering fires. If you have questions call a trusted electrician.
- Keep your ceiling fan moving.
If the weather has started to cool in your area, you can still use your ceiling fans. Look for a small switch on the side of the fan to reverse the motor so it goes in a clockwise direction. This forces warm air near the ceiling down which helps warm the room and can help save money on your utility bill.
- Plan for the holidays.
Inspect all the wiring and extension cords on lights and displays you will be using. Consider recycling your old lights and upgrade to LED lights. An electrician can install weatherproof grounded outlets outside where you need them and a convenient switch orauto timer inside.
- Keep those utility bills in check.
A qualified electrician can upgrade your electric hot water heater with a timer to cycle the water heater off when not in use. Upgrade to motion sensing light switches for walk-in closets, dim pantries and hallways. This is a great use of new technology that can help save you money.
