Tis the season of decorating, but this time of the year also brings increased risks. Here are some tips from Mister Sparky® to help keep your family safe.
Adding decorations and colorful lights around the house is a great way to celebrate the holiday season, but electricians with Mister Sparky want to remind you with these extra decorations also comes the need for extra safety. A report just released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates there are about 250 injuries a day, nationwide, during the holidays. To help keep the holidays safe, consider these tips:
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires , so never leave the kitchen when you are cooking and keep children away from areas where food is being prepared.
Inspect all the extension cords you are using for lights and decorations. Check them periodically throughout the season and throw away any cords that are warm to the touch or frayed. Use extension cords rated for outside use, outside and those intended for inside use, inside. Always plug your cords into a GFCI outlet. If you need to upgrade your outlets, call a trusted electrician.
Test your smoke alarms each month and make sure you have enough to cover your home. The NFPA recommends a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home. The group also recommends replacing all smoke alarms in your house every 10 years.
