Kids are naturally curious. While it's easy to keep sharp objects and other hazards out of reach, protecting your little ones from electrical dangers isn't always as straightforward.

An electrical safety childproofing checklist can help keep your family safe without interrupting daily life.

1. Cover All Unused Electrical Outlets

Childproofing electrical outlets is one of the most effective ways to protect your kids. Outlets are often at a child's eye level, making them easy to reach and explore. Start by covering them with plastic outlet covers, available at most hardware or home stores. Plastic covers prevent access to open sockets, keeping children safe.

You may also want to consider tamper-resistant receptacles, which have shutters that only open with the correct plug. Receptacles are a great option for lower-level outlets that younger children may have access to.

2. Secure Cords and Power Strips

Cords lying around are more than a trip hazard. They can also be dangerous if plugged in and played with. Cord organizers keep cords tidy and out of sight, reducing the temptation for kids to play with or pull them.

If you can, keep power strips with multiple plugs out of reach on a table or a high shelf. Consider getting power strip covers that hide the device and prevent access by little hands.

3. Keep Appliances Away From Water

Water conducts electricity, so it's important to keep appliances and cords away from pools, sinks, and baths. Remove radios from pool areas, and keep hairdryers and electric shavers out of reach in bathrooms. Teach kids to always dry their hands before using electronic devices, especially after washing or using the bathroom.

In the kitchen, store cords and plugs high up, and avoid placing appliances like coffee machines and toasters near the sink. Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) shut off when detecting a ground fault and are a great option for kitchen and bathroom outlets.
