Recessed Lighting

Serving Homeowners Across the Nation

For lighting that is subtle, sleek, and seamless, consider recessed lights. This versatile lighting offers a clean, streamlined look. It illuminates spaces and highlights key features without overpowering them.

Recessed ceiling lights are more complicated to install than some other types, so leave the job to the certified electricians at Mister Sparky®. We can handle any indoor lighting job with skill, experience, and industry-leading training.

What Are Recessed Lights?

Recessed lights are fixtures with concealed housing that sit flush with the ceiling. They install into an opening, leaving only the trim and light source visible. The understated design creates a minimalist appearance.

Two main types of recessed lights include insulation contact (IC) rated lights and non-IC-rated recessed lights. IC-rated lights stay cooler when installed near insulation, while non-IC-rated recessed lights must be kept away from insulation and are best for uninsulated areas.

Recessed Lighting Installation

Our experienced technicians know the safest way to install recessed lights. We can help you design the lighting layout to best suit the room's needs, whether for general or accent lighting. We'll ensure the electrical wiring is done correctly and safely and take precautions for installations near insulation.

We know and follow building local codes, so you can be confident your new recessed lighting installation will be in compliance while making a stylish addition to your space.

Illuminating the Benefits of Recessed Lighting

Consider recessed lighting to accent specific features or achieve a soft ambient glow. A few benefits of recessed lights include:

  • Sleek appeal: The flush profile blends into the ceiling for a seamless, uncluttered look. Recessed lights suit modern homes, letting interior design elements shine.
  • Versatile design: Use recessed lights for general, task, or accent lighting. There are options for every part of your home, including waterproof recessed lights for showers or bathrooms.
  • Space savings: These lights occupy less space than mounted or hanging fixtures. They are ideal for low ceilings, making rooms appear larger and more airy.
  • Dramatic effect: You can direct the light to showcase areas of visual interest. Highlight artwork, accent architecture, or give vanities a flattering glow.
  • Energy efficiency: Modern LED lights use less energy than traditional bulbs. Some even offer color temperature and brightness adjustment for the perfect ambience.

Frequently Asked Questions

We've answered some of the most common questions about recessed lighting.

How Do You Install Recessed Lighting?

To install recessed lighting, you need to:

  • Turn off the power to the room at the breaker.
  • Plan the placement of each light and draw an outline of each opening.
  • Drill a small hole in the center of the opening and check for obstructions.
  • Use a drywall saw to cut a hole the size of your planned opening.
  • Run and pull the electrical cable to each location and connect the wires.
  • Mount the light.
  • Add the light trims using coil springs or squeezable rod springs.
  • Install and screw in the bulb.

Recessed lighting installation is a complex process that requires expert knowledge of electrical wiring and lighting systems. If you have any doubts, it's best to hire a professional.

How Many Recessed Lights Do I Need in a Room?

For standard 8-foot-high ceilings, recessed lights should generally be placed 4 to 6 feet apart and 2 to 3 feet away from walls. Using this general guideline, you can determine the number of recessed lights you'll need based on your room size and ceiling height.

What Are the Different Types of Recessed Lighting Trims?

Common options include baffle, reflector, gimbal, wall wash, open, eyeball, and pinhole trims. Each trim serves a different purpose, such as reducing glare, amplifying light, or directing it.

How Do You Change a Recessed Light Bulb?

To change a recessed light bulb, pull down on the trim and press the clips or turn the bulb counterclockwise to release the old bulb. Carefully remove the bulb from the socket and install the new one.
