What Is A GFCI Outlet?

A GFCI outlet is a ground fault circuit interrupter that protects you and your family from receiving electrical shocks from faults in electrical devices. A GFCI outlet compares the input current on the hot side to the output current on the neutral side. If there’s the slightest difference in current, then it protects you by quickly cutting off the power supply. It only takes 20 to 30 milliseconds to shut off the power supply—significantly reducing the risk of getting electrocuted.

Mister Sparky (electricians: Matt, Nathan, Alex) did an amazing job rewiring my 96-year-old house. I originally called about replacing fans/overhead lights and fixing a faulty outlet, but their thorough investigation revealed the entire wiring system was deteriorating and a fire risk because it was so outdated. In addition to the rewiring, they added/moved outlets/switches/fixtures as needed, installed a surge protector and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, and created a new panel from my ancient electrical panel and subpanel.
