It’s not always crystal clear that you have an emergency electrical problem rather than a nuisance you can schedule services for. Many times, problems with wiring can lead to a genuine emergency. If you’re unsure, give us a call, and we can help diagnose your situation. You’re not alone.
Read on for some of the common indicators a serious problem.
Does the smell linger or come and go? Are your smoke detectors being set off? Check your appliances, all your outlets, ducts, and your breaker box to see if you can find the source. An unidentified odor may well be an electrical hazard, especially if you smell plastic burning.
Overall, a slight humming sound coming from your breaker box is normal as it runs an electrical current. However, if you notice the buzzing or humming getting continuously louder, address it quickly as it may mean the circuit breaker is overloaded. An overload heats the circuit wiring and can cause a life-threatening fire hazard.
There are a few reasons for a circuit breaker to keep tripping, including:
If your lights occasionally flicker, it’s likely a minor problem with your lightbulb or a faulty switch. When they persistently flicker this signals a more substantial problem such as a circuit overload, excess voltage, or loose wiring. These are dangerous and should have an inspection immediately.
There are many situations where one can experience electrical shock, such as:

A common issue with outlets is when debris builds up within. Electricity transfers to the dust and/or dirt, which causes arcing. Arcing creates heat, which is an immediate indicator of an electrical emergency that may start a fire. Other problems that can cause outlets to smoke include wiring issues, loose plug-in connections, and connecting too many devices to one outlet.
It’s normal to experience loss of power from storms or when everyone on the block loses power due to a problem with the electrical company. But when you’ve paid your monthly bill, and you’re the only one in the vicinity to lose power, it could be a hazardous problem with your breaker box that needs immediate diagnosis.
When water mixes with electricity, there is a high potential for electrocution. Water can get into your electrical panel through an improper seal on the box or soak through older cables of a meter box and through to the panel. If this has been happening for a longer period, corrosion can ruin multiple components of your electrical panel and increase resistance in the circuits causing more heat production, thus also creating a fire hazard.
If a fire is actively burning, you’ll first need to call 911 and get the fire put out immediately. Once there is no longer an immediate threat to your home or family, call your local emergency electrician. We’ll inspect and diagnose the source of the fire before performing repairs and putting preventative measures in place or replacing the system if it has been fully compromised.
It’s understandable to be hesitant in calling an emergency electrician due to being unsure of the cost. You can, however, rest easy knowing that Mister Sparky® prides itself on providing quality electrical service at a fair and honest price.
Multiple components contribute to the cost of hiring an emergency electrician. Here are factors that impact the cost:
In some cases, minor electrical repairs may be a DIY project, however, we recommend that you do not DIY. In the case of electrical emergencies, you’re already facing a higher likelihood of electrical fire because something has gone majorly wrong, which makes attempting any repairs yourself a dangerous undertaking.
To safely repair electrical problems, you’ll want to bring in a trained electrician who has experience handling hazardous issues. Not to mention, a certified professional will also carry insurance to cover potential mishaps. LOOK FOR THE BIG RED TRUCK™, where your Mister Sparky electrician has access to the necessary tools and equipment to properly perform any repairs without the risk of making the problem worse.
Hiring an electrician provides safety measures for your home. Not only in the moment, but also in the long term since an improper repair can lead to safety hazards down the line.
If you’re not familiar with the process for repairing each component of your electrical problem, it’s best to hire someone who does. That experience will be crucial for accurately diagnosing and repairing issues.
Ensuring that the electrician you hire is qualified means they’ll carry licensing to perform the necessary repairs properly and within the strict safety guidelines set by the National Electrical Code (NEC).
When you bring a professional in for electrical repairs, you can have confidence that the finishing results are safe. And with Mister Sparky, you have a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Knowing that there is a 24-hour emergency electrician available to help, you’ll have someone onsite quickly so that you’re not up at 3 am trying to fix hazards alone.

When power surges happen, from weather conditions or a sudden return of power after an outage, there is an abrupt rise in the voltage. Your electrical system is unexpectedly running too much electricity through the wires. This happens when the circuit breaker couldn’t handle the excess electricity, making anything plugged into the electrical system susceptible to burning out.
As a complex system, determining the underlying cause of an electrical panel malfunction without a professional electrician is difficult to do. Signs of an electrical panel emergency include:
As a safety measure for power outages that can last days, maintaining a functional generator is incredibly useful. It allows for keeping heat or air conditioning running, using essential appliances, and having lights on when you need them. Whether you have (or want to have) a permanent generator or hookups for a portable generator, you can count on the Mister Sparky team for reliable service.
You should replace your smoke detector every five years to ensure it’s completely reliable, and there should be a battery backup hardwired in case of emergency. As one of the most critically important components of your home’s protection system, you’ll need a team who can conduct impeccable repairs and understand when a replacement is best.
Are your outlets two-pronged, or not holding a plug well? Do sparks fly when you plug or unplug devices? These are all big red flags that you’re due for a repair or replacement for the safety of your home and family. Additionally, if you have outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, or outdoor areas that do not have test and reset buttons, you should replace these to prevent electric shocks.
When there is an abnormal electric current flow, it’s considered a fault. There are two main types: Short circuit and open circuit, which further classify into symmetrical or unsymmetrical faults. Determining the correct location and source of a fault is crucial to performing the proper repair to avoid further damages, hazards, and power interruption.
One of the most common causes of electrical emergencies is an outdated circuit breaker or wiring. Outdated electrical components can overload your home’s wiring, leading to a tripped breaker (loss of power) or a fire hazard. Regular electrical inspections can prevent these issues; when an electrician from Mister Sparky visits your home, we’ll inspect your electrical system for any potential hazards or problems. Then, we’ll propose cost-effective and durable solutions for each issue we find. All our work meets the highest industry standards and exceeds the requirements set by local and state codes.
It’s more important than ever to make sure your home is up to code. Households use more electronic devices than in any previous decade, like smartphones, tablets, streaming devices, hi-tech kitchen gadgets, entertainment systems, security systems, and more. With as high of a demand for power as families have now, it makes sense to ensure your home’s electrical is up to the task.

Elliot with Mister Sparky arrived during the specified time and was very respectful of our property. Elliot made sure he had a clear understanding of the job and what was expected and provided me with a clear outline of what he was going to do, along with the flat rate cost. I was apprehensive that the job would be unreasonably expensive with unexpected add ons and was getting ready to say No Thank you when I was provided with what I believe was a fair price for the amount of time the job actually took from start to finish. Elliot was friendly, easy to talk to and I felt comfortable asking question or talking about concerns. Thanks Elliott and Mister Sparky from a very satisfied customer. I do believe that a fair price and friendly service does a long way!

I had a lot of work for them and he was able to get it all done in one day, he even had to go to the store for parts did a fantastic job. Checked our whole house. Ran a new line in our garage because several sockets, out there, wire got nicked and stopped working . Now fixed. But cost $1,400. $400 to checked problems and $1000 to run wire. They came back to do re wiring our bedroom had to re wire the light re wire outlets and put in a new electric panel. They came out at the last minute and finished up before my big party I feel very safe now. Before our electric was tripping every day with fear of house burning down. Now I feel safe. But once again it was very expensive $4,500. They were fast. Precise, neat, professional, and did a good job.

I looked for a quote on Angie’s List for a ceiling fan install and Mister Sparky were the most-communicative and straightforward with their safety inspections and quoting. Elliot came out and did the quote and helped break down what I needed and some safety and quality of life upgrades, then helped explain my choices. They offered to do the work same day which was convenient. I opted to take some time to think about it and scheduled for a week or so later. On the day of our appointment, I did need to call and make sure they were still coming as I didn’t get any confirmation. They let me know they were running a little late but assured me they were on their way. The manager called an hour later and explained a job was going longer than planned to address some safety concerns, but someone was still coming. 3 hours after the original appointment window, I got a call asking to reschedule. They were really nice to work with, and a little more communication would have been appreciated. Kyle and Robin came out to do the job and they were very communicative and respectful. They did a really clean job installing the ceiling fans. They made sure I saw how everything worked and pointed out an issue with the fan I bought so I could work out the warranty. After they left, I realized a three way switch wasn’t wired the way I expected, but I think that’s an easy fix. Overall, I would recommend them for quality of work, timing, and customer satisfaction.

Elliot and Anthony did a great job finishing a complex job in a day, Anthony even stayed late (with his supervisor I believe?) to make sure the job got done. The project included replacing most of the outlets and switches in the home to aluminum compatible devices, along with a new electrical panel. The day after, Elliot came back (with another electrician whose name I forgot) to label the panel and fix any mishaps that we noticed. Would be a 5 star review if they cleaned up a little better after themselves and, at the very least, told us about breaking a family souvenir from Peru. We found the souvenir placed back on the shelf it likely fell from and still finding pieces of copper lying around the house, which is a concern with little ones running around the house. Overall, satisfied with the services and professional demeanor of both Elliot and Anthony. Just a little disappointed about the broken souvenir.

Colton was my service rep today. He did a great job. Coming back tomorrow to install my new microwave, install new security lights and hang the rest of my outdoor lights for the back yard. I am so pleased with everything. He is also replacing the three prong light switch in the bathroom downstairs. A very reasonable price. I am impressed. Busy day tomorrow.
