New Prague is a city in Scott and Le Sueur counties with one of the most distinctive cultural identities in all of southern Minnesota, a community whose Czech immigrant heritage. Founded by settlers from Bohemia in the 1850s, it has been lovingly preserved in the architecture of its downtown, the annual Dozinky festival celebrating the Czech harvest tradition, and a community pride in its heritage. That pride makes New Prague feel genuinely different from the surrounding Minnesota towns. The New Prague Area Schools serve a community that balances pride in its past with an eye on its growing future, as the city's I-35 access has made it increasingly attractive to Twin Cities commuters.
New Prague's housing ranges from the Victorian and late 19th century homes in the historic downtown core. Many of these homes carry the architectural character of Czech-influenced vernacular construction unique to this part of Minnesota, through the mid-century residential development of the postwar decades, to the newer subdivisions developing as commuter growth reaches this community. The older properties carry knob-and-tube and early electrical systems updated piecemeal over a century. Mid-century homes carry the familiar Federal Pacific panel and aluminum wiring inventory of that construction era. Newer developments need the full suite of contemporary electrical upgrades.
