Elko New Market is a small Scott County city formed in 2006 by the merger of the adjacent communities of Elko and New Market. These were two small agricultural towns along I-35 that chose to consolidate into a single municipality positioned squarely in the path of the Twin Cities' expanding southern suburban frontier. The city's location on I-35 approximately 25 miles south of Minneapolis has made it one of the more interesting communities in our service territory. It’s a place where traditional small-town Minnesota character and the familiar landscape of corn and soybean fields are being transformed by residential growth from the metro's continuing southward expansion.
Elko New Market's housing reflects this transition. The older properties in the community's agricultural core, farmhouses and the modest homes of the original small towns, carry mid-20th century electrical infrastructure. The newer residential development that has followed I-35's commuter access represents more modern construction with modern electrical systems, but with the full complement of contemporary electrical demand. This includes EV chargers for households that are making the switch in part because the I-35 commute to the city makes fuel savings meaningful. It also includes generator backup for a community on the rural-suburban frontier, where outage exposure from blizzards and summer storms is genuine. Smart home technology is another important upgrade, especially because newer construction makes it practical.
