Two Types of Protection

Point of use surge protectors are designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment and major appliances in the home at their electric source. Point of use suppressors are usually devices that plug into the wall outlet and can handle surges up to 6,000 volts.

A whole-house surge protector is designed to protect your home again transient surges that enter through the home’s electric supply, but does not protect from surges created internally in the home when motors turn on and off. Whole home protectors are devices that are installed at the meter or electrical panel. These devices require the installation by a licensed electrical contractor.

The surge protector attempts to regulate the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or by shorting to ground voltages above a safe threshold.

The Need for a Surge Protector

There are a number of reasons why power quality has become such an important issue. Today’s computer chips are more sensitive to even slight surges, and most homes and offices are using more equipment than ever before. Each time a device is turned on, transient voltages may be generated. Additionally, more microprocessor technology is being used than ever before, in personal computers, TVs, stereos, gaming systems, DVRs, refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwave ovens, dishwashers and just about any electrical device manufactured today.

Internal surges occur when devices with motors (like refrigerators and hair dryers) shut off. The energy these devices were consuming is suddenly redirected elsewhere in the form of excess voltage. Surges can also occur when the power company switches power from one geographic area of the grid to another to meet system demand. And, thunderstorms and lightening are the most dramatic and destructive causes of power line problems and electric surges.

He arrived early, was professional and personable, and took the time to explain what he was doing and why. He clearly walked me through the pricing, the recommended repairs, and which items were higher priority versus things that could wait, which I appreciated. I can’t complain I lost power to my efficiency apartment on New Year’s Eve at night Mister sparky tech Frank Ramirez came out to look at the problem and of course my electricity was the original from when the home was built 1950. Frank Thoroughly explained the problems I was having. Frank, David and Jason took care of the problem. Keep in mind the reviews helped me to choose a Reliable company. Ant and Mark did an excellent job servicing my home today. They came out to give an estimate on my issue with no power to my water heater. They found that the water heater breaker was tripping and not resetting. I provided the breaker and they replaced that for me but they noticed in the laundry room was missing a bushing and the grounding wasn’t up to par along with a loose box. They did a great job of letting me know the issues and provided options for me. I will be recommending to family and friends the great work they completed for me. I now have hot water ; and now a happy customer!

Frank was the technician and he was prompt, professional, and very communicative as the work progressed. I needed a motion sensor switch fixed after I’d tripped the breaker trying to install it myself, along with a GFCI outlet replacement and an outdoor spotlight swap. Frank explained what went wrong, worked efficiently, and had everything completed quickly. The work looks clean, everything was tested, and everything was working perfectly when he left. Overall, a smooth, stress-free service call. I’m very happy with the work and would definitely use them again.
