Tips for Making Your Appliances Last Longer
October 26, 2022
In this day and age we hear a lot of the same complaint: electrical home appliances just don’t last as long as they used to. It is true that the production process for these items has
significantly changed. However, there are some key upkeep practices that you should be routinely performing that many people are not aware of. Here are just a few practices that can
help extend the life of your electrical appliances.
- Regularly clean the coils on your fridge. Coil cleaning takes roughly 15 minutes but can save thousands in repair costs. The condenser coils are on the outside of the fridge and typically reside on the back or underneath your fridge. First, unplug your fridge. Second, find the cover for the condenser coils and remove it. Third, remove any dirt or dust off of the coils and condenser fan with a brush and/or vacuum. Lastly, simply replace the cover and repeat approximately once every six months.
- Clean the inside of your dishwasher. Leftover food scraps and mineral deposits that build up over time can wreak havoc on your dishwasher. To take care of mineral deposits, run an empty dishwasher with a cup of white vinegar. To get rid of any food residue, remove and clean the racks and scrub the inside of the dishwasher.
- Respect the load limits on your washer and dryer. This tip is relatively straight forward; make sure you are familiarized with the recommended load limits on your washer and dryer. Overloading your machines can lead to excessive or unbalanced weight pressure which can cause parts to break prematurely.
- Check the dryer filters to ensure airflow. Many people regularly clear the lint screen before each load in the dryer to avoid fire hazards. However, every few months it is good to vacuum out the lint trap area as well . Additionally, it can help to scrub the lint screen every few months with soap and water to get rid of buildup.
