As the scorching heat of summer approaches, making sure your HVAC system is working properly will ensure your home stays cool without incurring outrageous energy costs. To help keep your electric bill down, we’ve compiled three HVAC maintenance tips that will get you through the summer:

  1. Replace the Air Filter: Now that your cooling system will be used more, your air filter must be replaced. Constant use during the hot summer days means your unit will be circulating more air through its system. A dirty filter can cause the unit to freeze over or burn out. If your system freezes over, it will not cool, causing the motor to run continually. This can cause your energy bill to skyrocket during the summer. so now is the perfect time to change it.

  2. Check the Wiring: It’s important to check the wiring of your HVAC system on a regular basis to make sure it continues to work properly during the summer months. Turn off the system and open the access panel. If you notice any wires that look burned or blackened, it’s time to call a professional at Mr. Sparky’s and get them replaced.

  3. Replace or Upgrade the Thermostat: To maximize your energy savings without sacrificing comfort, you can install an automatic setback or programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats adjust the temperature setting for you automatically. A major advantage is that you can also sync it to your phone or laptop and monitor energy use when you are away from your home. Even if you forget to adjust the air before you leave for work in the morning, a programmable thermostat will not. By maintaining the highest or lowest required temperatures for four or five hours a day instead of 24 hours, a programmable thermostat can help save a substantial amount in energy.
