Types of EV Chargers

An electric vehicle’s ability to quickly recharge depends on two things: a home’s electrical supply and the EV charging unit used. EV chargers are broken down into three levels. Level one chargers are the slowest, while level three chargers are the fastest.

Level 1 Chargers

A level 1 charger comes standard with an electric vehicle. Because they use a home’s standard outlet, these chargers are most useful for slow overnight charges.

Level 2 Chargers

Level two chargers do their job faster but require an electrician for installation. These chargers need a dedicated 240-volt circuit to supply a current strong enough to charge an electric vehicle at a faster rate. Level 2 chargers can add approximately 70 miles of range for each hour of charging! These are the most popular options for home charging.

Level 3 Chargers

Level 3 EV chargers are incredibly fast but require an industrial supply of power, making them difficult for homeowners to install. These charging stations can recharge an electric vehicle’s battery to 80% in only 30 minutes. Level 3 chargers are not typically possible to install at home.

What Amperage Do I Need on My Breaker Panel for EV Charger Installation?

To install a Level 2 charger, you will probably need a 150 amp or 200 amp service. For 100 amp service or less, your EV or Tesla charger will probably take up too much capacity for your home. You may need to consider an upgrade for lower amp service. We recommend installing a 200 amp service to ensure you have enough capacity to handle the electrical demands of your home.

Beau was very professional and did a very thorough job assessing my project and diagnosing potential issues. I was notified via text that he was on his way and he arrived on time and went straight to work. He conducted his inspection and then walked through all of my options and gave me a very specific breakdown of what each would entail and cost. He wasn’t pushy and gave me time to make a decision. I’m looking forward to seeing my project completed. Update: Edgar and Tanner showed up today to complete my project and went above and beyond to ensure everything was 100% to my satisfaction. They installed a new, 3-tier chandelier for my 20ft ceiling and even went the extra mile to make adjustments to the chandelier once it was installed. This was something they didn’t have to do, but offered to spend the extra time to make it right. There was also a piece missing and Tanner worked to fashion a piece that would work with the existing hardware. Once they were finished, I couldn’t tell they had even been there. What do you do when an improperly mounted chandelier suddenly falls from a 14 foot ceiling on a Saturday night, and dangles precariously by a wire? Call Mister Sparky! Dakota showed up to the house within a couple of hours. He was able to remove the chandelier that night, install a new smoke detector that was up high, answer questions, and inspect the fuse box. He also went into the attic to inspect two adjacent chandeliers and noticed that another was insuffiently mounted. He showed us pics and explained in detail why it was a problem. We decided to take the opportunity to replace all three lighting fixtures. Dakota made arrangements for the following day. Edgar called me at the scheduled time on Sunday. He arrived ready to work. He spent all day working and did a stellar job. Everyone at Mr Sparky was courteous, professional, and timely. We are very pleased with our experience and would highly recommend them.

Jordan did a great job on the 70 point inspection for my house today. It gave me a lot of peace of mind that everything is in good shape.
