Fort Sheridan is one of the most historically significant residential communities in the entire greater Chicago area. It is a former U.S. Army post established in 1887 on Lake Michigan's bluffs between Highland Park and Lake Forest. Its distinctive late Victorian military architecture has been thoughtfully converted into a residential community since the fort's closure in 1993. The Fort Sheridan Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The residential conversion has preserved the extraordinary collection of brick officer's quarters, barracks, water tower, and support buildings that form one of the most cohesive groups of late-Victorian military architecture remaining in the United States.
