A dead outlet is quite an inconvenience, but that doesn’t mean it’s always a complicated fix. Dead outlets are easily fixed by any electrician, but sometimes you might be able to fix it yourself.

See if a Breaker Flipped

The most common reason an outlet is dead is because its fuse has been tripped from an electrical overload. Don’t rely on your lights as an indication of a tripped fuse because outlets aren’t always on the same circuit as the overhead lights or nearby outlets. Check your fuse box and see if any of the switches flipped before proceeding with any other troubleshooting.

Did Something Trip the GFCI?

Ground fault circuit interrupter outlets are located near water sources, so you’ll find these in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and the home’s exterior. If these outlets sense water in any way, they will shut themselves and other connected outlets off to prevent electrical shock. These outlets have reset buttons and/or they’re labeled as GFCI. When a GFCI isn’t working, try pushing the test button. If the reset button doesn’t pop out, the GFCI has gone bad and needs to be repaired. If the reset button trips every time you press the test button, water is leaking somewhere, and you need to immediately call a professional.

Use Different Devices to Check the Outlet

Sometimes it isn’t the outlet that’s the problem, but it is the device itself. Many electricians have stories of coming out for a service call and working on an outlet only to discover the light or appliance was broken. Before you call an electrician, plug something else in first. Of course, if the second item doesn’t turn on, then it’s the outlet. Contact a qualified electrician for further assistance.
