Summers in Florida always come with two things: high temperatures and high electric bills. Fortunately, there are things you can do to avoid both. Just like standing in the shade when it’s hot out, you can shade yourself from high electric bills. Here are five ways you can save money on your electric bill this season, and each season after that.

1. Keep Your AC Working Efficiently

People rely heavily on their air conditioning systems during the summer months. Just like you wouldn’t drive a car with its maintenance light on across the country, you shouldn’t rely on a clogged up AC to keep you cool over the summer.

A dirty air conditioner will have to use more energy to cool your home. And more energy use, of course, means a higher energy bill. By having your AC cleaned and maintained regularly, you can dramatically cut energy costs. In addition to replacing your air filter once a month, you should have technician tune up your AC once a year.

2. Close Curtains During the Day

If you’re at home on a hot day, sitting in a room that has a window directly facing the sun, things are going to heat up quickly. Closing the curtains or shades, so they block the sun from shining through the window, is an easy solution to keeping the room cooler. This way, your AC won’t have to work as hard to keep you comfortable and you won’t have to use as much energy to run it.

3. Ditch the Incandescent Light Bulbs

While more expensive up front, LED and CFL light bulbs use less energy when turned on and last far longer than incandescent bulbs. The money these more energy efficient bulbs will save you on energy will make the up-front costs more than worth it.

4. Unplug Appliances or Systems Not Being Used

While you may like to keep your appliances and entertainment systems ready and waiting for you when you come home, you could shave some costs by unplugging each those devices when you aren’t using them. Even small devices, like your phone charger, continue to suck energy when they’re plugged in but not being used. It’s especially beneficial to leave your electronic devices, including anything from your TV to your microwave, unplugged if you’re leaving town for a few days or more.

5. Do Chores by Hand

If you have the time and wish to save energy, your best option is to not use certain appliances at all. Instead of using your dryer, hang your clothes outside to air dry. The best time to do this is during summer — just make sure it’s not going to rain that day. Additionally, you can save money by hand washing your dishes instead of running the dishwasher.
