Types of EV Chargers

An electric vehicle’s ability to quickly recharge depends on two things: a home’s electrical supply and the EV charging unit used. EV chargers are broken down into three levels. Level one chargers are the slowest, while level three chargers are the fastest.

Level 1 Chargers

A level 1 charger comes standard with an electric vehicle. Because they use a home’s standard outlet, these chargers are most useful for slow overnight charges.

Level 2 Chargers

Level two chargers do their job faster but require an electrician for installation. These chargers need a dedicated 240-volt circuit to supply a current strong enough to charge an electric vehicle at a faster rate. Level 2 chargers can add approximately 70 miles of range for each hour of charging! These are the most popular options for home charging.

Level 3 Chargers

Level 3 EV chargers are incredibly fast but require an industrial supply of power, making them difficult for homeowners to install. These charging stations can recharge an electric vehicle’s battery to 80% in only 30 minutes. Level 3 chargers are not typically possible to install at home.

What Amperage Do I Need on My Breaker Panel for EV Charger Installation?

To install a Level 2 charger, you will probably need a 150 amp or 200 amp service. For 100 amp service or less, your EV or Tesla charger will probably take up too much capacity for your home. You may need to consider an upgrade for lower amp service. We recommend installing a 200 amp service to ensure you have enough capacity to handle the electrical demands of your home.

John is outstanding! One of the few completely honest contractors of very high integrity and knowledge! He goes above and beyond on every job! Highly recommend. As a certified Koehler technician he performed clean-up work last year when our original installer couldn’t get the generator running— John was our lifesaver and knew exactly what was wrong and performed repairs and got us going. Last minute call to the local Mr. Sparky asking for the appointment for today, 4/2/2025. Was given a window of 8:30 AM to 1030 AM for arrival. Got a text that tech was on the way and he arrived a little after 9! The tech, John Tornabene, came in introduced himself and asked what all was going to be done. We pointed out the rooms where the celing light/fan was going to go, where the two pendents were going and where the long light was going. After looking over all the products John got to work. There were a few hick ups along the way and that was due to the use of puck lights and a lot of plastic being used in the construction of the house. John over came it all and finished and left the place better than when he found it. Professional, courteous, friendly and skilled are all good adjectives to describe this man! Great job John, thank you.

I'm very pleased with the work done by Mister Sparky. Getting an appointment was easy and the technician, John, was on time and very professional. I had a circuit that had worked for 15 years stopped working (trip the breaker when the switch was turned on). John found that rodents had eaten the insulation off the wires. He showed me pictures and kept me informed the whole time as he replaced the damaged wiring. Definitely will use Mister Sparky for any of my electeical needs in the future!
