Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI)

GFCIs, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters, protect people in areas where small appliances are likely to be used and where water is present. GFCIs are required in bathrooms, kitchens, outside for sump pumps, and many other areas.

What To Look For

When looking at a GFCI outlet you will notice two slots at the top and a hole at the bottom. The larger slot at the top left is known as the neutral, the smaller slot to the right is known as the “hot”, and the hole below both slots is known as the neutral.

How It Works

Electricity flows from the hot to the neutral when the outlet is being used. If there is an imbalance, the breaker will trip which means the power is automatically cut off. To regain power to the outlet, first remove the plug from the outlet and push the RESET button. If the power to the outlet continues to cut off, you should call a licensed electrician at Mister Sparky® to inspect and correct the problem.

Should I Be Pushing the TEST Button?

Yes! We recommend that you test your GFCI outlets once per month. Press the TEST button and the RESET button should pop out. If it does, the GFCI is working and you can press the TEST button. If the RESET button does not pop out or can’t be pushed back in, the G.F.C.I is not functioning properly and should be diagnosed and repaired immediately. Call the Mister Sparky® to schedule an appointment to have one of our licensed electricians resolve the issue!
