For homeowners who are buying, selling, or considering a new home, electrical inspections are crucial to a.) understanding what you're getting into, and b.) ensuring a home is safe. Even newly-remodeled homes might have neglected electrical systems with aging components, outdated design, and other problems that range from inconvenient to dangerous.

It's also worth noting that older homes might not be up to the most recent codes, as the NEC is constantly improving and iterating. Even if a home is up to code, it may not be suited for the demanding power needs of the average family. With several laptops, smartphones, screens, and other devices for each family member, having reliable power everywhere in the house is vital—an inspection lets you know what you're working with.

Local jurisdictions and code enforcement boards inspect for compliance with the minimum standards, as set forth in code. Some electric code violation guidelines include:

Bathrooms

GFCI receptacles are required in bathrooms.
There must be a receptacle within 3 feet of the outside edge of the sink basin.
No receptacles face-up on countertops.

To avoid critical overloading on receptacles where high wattage power devices like hair dryers could be in use, there must be at least one separate 20 amp. branch circuit.

General Rooms

There should be wall receptacles every 12 feet.
Receptacles should be on any wall space that is more than 24 inches wide.
Hallways more than 10 feet in length must have at least one receptacle.

Kitchens

All countertops receptacles must be GFCI (ground fault current interrupter).
There can be no receptacles more than 20 inches above countertops (Exceptions are for the physically handicapped and for islands or peninsulas where this is not possible).
There should be receptacles above all countertops that are 12 inches or wider.
No face-up receptacles.
At least one receptacle should be located on islands or peninsulas.

When these things occur, heat transfer to surrounding objects can cause them to smoke or ignite. This is essentially a form of lightning and the risk of fire or electric shock is very real. Ungrounded plugs and faulty outlets are also causes of home fires. Tristan and was very thorough and was able to determine the problem quickly. He was very knowledgeable and was able to walk us through next steps in a way that left us feeling confident even though the expense was high. He came back that evening with Austin to replace our entire electrical panel, which was not what we were expecting. Tristan explained everything to us and showed us information about our old panel and the hazard it was for our home. He did a phenomenal job, was quiet while our kids slept, and left the space clean. The next day, Austin returned to install and replace smoke/CO detectors around our house, replacing the old ones and connecting all the new ones together. What started as flickering lights in one room, turned into a much bigger job, but we are happy that nothing more serious happened before we made the upgrades. We had no idea that if something happened, insurance wouldn’t have covered the damages because of the old panel. Mister Sparky was highly recommended by many friends and neighbors and now we know why!

Wow!!! Where do I start?? 5 Star Service from the beginning text with the company scheduler all the way to my two electricians! Beau & Tristen truly cared about the quality of work they were providing for us! Beau went above and beyond to get our service completed on a short timeline that I was needing to surprise my husband!!! He removed our old ceiling fan, installed the new one and completed a remote install for the fan! This particular install is for an incredibly tall ceiling in our living room that took either a lift or incredibly tall later. In addition, it was on a sloped ceiling that needed a particular install kit that did not come with the fan and was not available at nearby hardware stores. Beau went out of his way to find what we needed with one of their suppliers and was able to come finish the job the next morning - ON HIS DAY OFF! 😳 😭 🙏 THEN… He & Tristan put our new couch together and in place after his work was completed!!! I cannot thank he, Tristen and the Sparky Team enough for their incredible care, communication & quality of service! I would recommend them to anyone!!!

What do you do when an improperly mounted chandelier suddenly falls from a 14 foot ceiling on a Saturday night, and dangles precariously by a wire? Call Mister Sparky! Dakota showed up to the house within a couple of hours. He was able to remove the chandelier that night, install a new smoke detector that was up high, answer questions, and inspect the fuse box. He also went into the attic to inspect two adjacent chandeliers and noticed that another was insuffiently mounted. He showed us pics and explained in detail why it was a problem. We decided to take the opportunity to replace all three lighting fixtures. Dakota made arrangements for the following day. Edgar called me at the scheduled time on Sunday. He arrived ready to work. He spent all day working and did a stellar job. Everyone at Mr Sparky was courteous, professional, and timely. We are very pleased with our experience and would highly recommend them.
