Fire Safety

Have you checked your smoke detectors?

We look for expiration dates on food, coupons, and more, but we may forget to check those on important electrical and safety devices around and inside our homes.

Smoke Detectors

With a useful life of 10 years, you can check the expiration date of your smoke detectors on the back of the module or under the battery compartment.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Lasting five to seven years, these safety devices are also stamped with an expiration date. Plan a day twice per year to test both your carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors to ensure they are functioning.

Fire Extinguishers

The useful life of fire extinguishers can vary; however, your disposable fire extinguisher most likely will have a lifespan between five and fifteen years, with non-‐disposable models lasting five to six years. Find your fire extinguisher’s expiration date on the tag near the nozzle.

Surge Protectors

While surge protectors don’t have a set expiration date, the amount of electrical surge absorbed determines their lifespan. How will you know you’re in need of a new one? The indicator light should come on, but if there is no light on your surge protector, try to replace it every two years or following a major electrical surge occurrence.
