Good Time for an Energy Safety Check

03/06/15

Daylight saving time is about to begin. It’s a good time for a quick safety check and energy check around your home.

As we spring our clocks forward early Sunday to kick off daylight saving time, the trusted electricians at Mister Sparky® recommend using this time to make some safety and energy improvements at home. Consider these top three tips:

  • Battery Check and Upgrades

The National Fire Protection Association recommends testing your smoke alarms each month and replacing the entire alarm every 10 years.[1] While you are changing all the clocks in your home, it may also be a good time to test your smoke alarms and check the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.  If your alarms are more than 10 years old, it’s a good time to replace the alarm with a newer version.

  • Indoors

As we head into spring and summer, some homeowners may be using additional energy. One way to help save is by upgrading your lighting. According to the Department of Energy, by replacing the bulbs on your five most used lighting fixtures with energy efficient ones you could save about $75 dollars a year on your utility bill.[2]

  • Outdoors

As the season changes you may be outside more. Now is a great time to invest in energy efficient outdoor lighting. Illuminated pathways and exteriors could help improve safety and security around your home by eliminating dark areas. If you use LED lighting you could save additional money and energy. According to the Department of Energy, LED bulbs are six to seven times more energy efficient than conventional lights and can reduce the energy you use by more than 80 percent, plus they can last more than 25 times longer.[3]
